The Different Types Of Dermal Fillers Explained

One of our most frequently asked questions is about the different types of dermal fillers that are on offer, and that we provide at our clinic. There are a wide variety of other brands and types of dermal fillers that are suited for different areas and problems.

What Is Dermal Filler?

Starting with the basics let’s talk about what dermal filler actually is. Firstly, it’s a very non-invasive cosmetic procedure, that is administered through injections in the desired area. It’s a gel substance made up of Hyaluronic Acid, Collagen, (CaHA) & (PLLA).

Although that sounds scary, these are all substances that would be found naturally in your body. As we age, our production of collagen and other things slows down drastically, so putting it back into your skin restores the youth and volume lost in your face and other areas through aging. Dermal fillers are administered under the skin and can help shape, restore volume, and plump the skin.

Why Are Dermal Fillers Used?

Collagen production slows with age, Collagen is what keeps the plumpness and firmness in your skin. So when that production starts to decline, you may start to see changes in your skin such as fine lines, loss of volume, sagging, and wrinkling. Therefore you may choose dermal fillers to help with;

  • Loss of volume & hollowing
  • Smooth wrinkles and creasing in the skin
  • Plump lips and cheeks
  • Sharpen & shape features
  • Make facial features more symmetrical

Now the question is, what are the different kinds of dermal fillers available? And how can they achieve different results?

Juvederm Dermal Filler

Juvederm is the leading and most reputable provider of dermal fillers on the market today. Juvederm contains a high amount of Hyaluronic Acid, making it extremely hydrating to the skin, and making it one of the most natural looking, and smoothing dermal fillers.

With 6 different products available tailored to different uses, it is a specialist dermal filler that provides extremely natural, yet precise results. Depending on the type of procedure you are after, the product that your clinician decides on may vary. For example;

Juvederm VOLBELLA

An injectable gel that is best used for the augmentation of lips, for tear trough filler to help solve under-eye hollowing, and also for filling lines around the mouth (smokers lines).

Juvederm VOLUMA

An injectable gel that is suitable for deeper injecting and to help shape and enhance facial features and restore age-related volume loss in areas such as the chin and cheeks.

Juvederm VOLUX

A gel that firms up more than other Juvederm products, as it is specifically for use in the jaw area and defining the jaw line.

This allows for your treatment to be much more customisable, and ensures that the dermal fillers being used for your treatment are designed specifically for that area.

Rederm

Although not classed as a ‘traditional’ dermal filler Rederm contains the same ingredients as a dermal filler, however, this treatment does not settle on the tissue of your skin and is typically called a skin booster.

Therefore, this type of treatment will not actually necessarily enhance your features, or change anything as such, but it will work to hydrate and plump the skin and can help with skin volume loss. How Rederm works and is administered is also slightly different from traditional filler. It is injected into specific target areas like the under eyes to create small bumps, the product injected then breaks down in this concentrated area to combat skin concerns through hydration and stimulation.

Profhilo

Profhilo is also classed as a ‘skin booster’ but as it does provide a lifting, tightening effect and has a very similar ingredient list to dermal filler, it is classed as a dermal filler product. It is still an injectable gel, but it has a higher concentration of Hyaluronic Acid, making it very fluid and spreadable, allowing it to be injected in a specific pattern to stimulate collagen production and elastin in the skin.

Profhilo isn’t limited to the face, it can also be used on areas like the neck, hands, and décolletage. Typically, Profhilo is administered over 2 sessions for optimal results through a series of injections in the same areas. The most impressive part of Profhilo is not only does it hydrate and improve your skin, but it also remodels any ageing and sagging tissue already present.

What Happens Before Having Dermal Filler?

Before having any treatments at our clinic, our clinician will assess and advise on the best course of action based on what you’re looking to achieve. Based on your skin concerns and what you want to treat with filler, your clinician will advise you on the best product for you.

If you have had previous filler already, our staff will need to know this, and when you last received treatment. To book in for any dermal filler treatments, you can do so here.
