Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a cosmetic procedure that involves using a device with tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries on the skin. The needles penetrate the upper layers of the skin to stimulate the body’s natural healing process, resulting in increased collagen and elastin production, and improved skin texture and appearance.
During a microneedling treatment, your skin will be cleansed and a numbing cream applied to minimize discomfort. Then, a specialized microneedling device, such as a dermaroller or a microneedling pen, is gently rolled or stamped over the skin, creating tiny punctures. These micro-injuries trigger the body’s wound healing response, leading to the production of new collagen and elastin fibres, which help to rejuvenate the skin.
What skin conditions can be helped with microneedling treatments?
Microneedling can be used to address a variety of skin concerns, such as fine lines and wrinkles, scars (including acne scars), hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, and texture irregularities. It is commonly performed on the face but can also be used on other areas of the body, such as the neck, décolletage, and hands.

The skin is thoroughly cleansed to remove any makeup, dirt, or debris from the surface.
A numbing cream may be applied to the skin to minimize discomfort during the procedure. The cream is usually left on for about 20-30 minutes to ensure adequate numbing.
Once the skin is numb, the microneedling device is gently rolled or stamped over the treatment area. The device contains tiny needles that create micro-injuries on the skin’s surface, usually ranging from 0.5 to 2.5 millimeters in depth, depending on the desired treatment goals and the area being treated. The needles create controlled punctures or channels in the skin, which stimulate the body’s natural healing response.
During or after the microneedling treatment, serums or topicals may be applied to the skin. This can include hyaluronic acid, growth factors, or other beneficial ingredients that can penetrate deeper into the skin through the micro-channels created by the needles, helping to nourish and rejuvenate the skin.
The number of microneedling sessions needed can vary depending on the individual’s skin condition and treatment goals. Some people may see results after a single session, while others may require multiple treatments spaced several weeks apart to achieve the desired outcome.
Microneedling treatment repairs the skin and so is effectively permanent, nevertheless as your skin develops with age you may need more treatments and the major benefits will be seen after 3-6 treatments.
As with any treatment side effects can appear, although they are not common. Patients may experience slight swelling, tenderness and bruising around the treated area, as well as a redness, sensitivity, dryness or flaking. Your practitioner will discuss all potentail side effects in detail with you.
After the microneedling treatment, the skin may be slightly red, and there may be some mild discomfort or sensitivity, similar to a sunburn. The healthcare professional or aesthetician will provide post-treatment instructions, which may include avoiding sun exposure, using gentle skincare products, and avoiding strenuous exercise or activities that may cause sweating for a few days after the treatment.
