How to Beat Acne

Anyone who’s had acne knows what a pain it is. Red pimples, bumps and scarring on our faces and bodies can strip us of our confidence. It can physically hurt too.

Acne affects almost all of us at some point in our lives. For some, it ravages their teen years, and for some, it rears its ugly head when their time of the month comes.

It is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles under the skin become clogged. Sebum (oil) and dead skin cells clog up pores, leading to outbreaks of pimples. Different types of pimples form such as whiteheads, blackheads and papules – when pimples become inflamed.

Here at the Cosmetic Centre, we believe no one should have to suffer from acne. Why should we? In this day and age, there is unlimited knowledge and countless treatments to overcome acne problems!

Although there is unfortunately no way to guarantee to banish breakouts forever, there are treatments and steps you can take to reduce breakouts, and scarring, and heal your skin.

Treatments we offer

Aquapure – our bespoke facial, the practitioner will specially select ingredients to target your acne concerns. For acne-prone skin, the practitioner is likely to use active acne-fighting ingredients, such as salicylic acid. Salicylic acid treats acne by unplugging blocked pores and drying pimples. allowing them to shrink. This then reduces swelling and redness.

For acne-prone skin, the practitioner is likely to incorporate both the lactic acid and salicylic acid peel and rejuvenate the skin after using hyaluronic acid serum, electroporation and cooling.

The lactic acid peel uses lactic acid to exfoliate dead skin cells, which helps to fade pigmentation from acne breakouts.

The rejuvenation stages after the peel will be extremely beneficial to acne-prone skin. It hydrates the skin, which is important as dry skin could trigger the sebaceous gland to secrete more acne-producing sebum.

Chemical Peel – penetrates deep into the skin’s epidermis to achieve a deep exfoliation. The skin peel removes the top layer of the skin, stimulating cell growth, which results in clearer skin, addressing pigmentation and acne concerns. We use corrective peels, using a combination of malic and salicylic acid, and botanical extracts to calm the skin throughout.

Malic acid encourages cell turnover, which reduces problem bacteria as the build-up of dead cells is decreased. This reveals brighter, smoother and clearer skin.

Microneedling – our effective treatment for targeting and reducing acne scarring. Microneedling stimulates the body’s natural collagen which refreshes and rejuvenates your skin’s appearance, minimising scarring. It uses your body’s own healing substances to rebuild and smooth out the skin around the scars.

If you’re insecure about acne scars, then this treatment could have wonderful effects on both your skin and your self-esteem.

It repairs the skin, so it’s effectively permanent. We offer both manual and mechanical microneedling- our practitioners will determine what is the best one for you upon consultation.

General Advice

We don’t want to patronise you, but properly washing your face is crucial. It removes excess sebum and dirt which clogs up pores. However, washing your face too much can strip your skin of its natural sebum and make your acne worse!

Use products suitable for your skin type, oil skin is likely to be more acne-prone. If you’re unsure of your skin type, come in for a skin consultation with us!

It may seem counter-intuitive, but moisturising regularly will help keep acne at bay. As stated earlier, it will hydrate your skin and prevent your sebaceous glands from producing excess oil. Choose light, oil-free, perfume-free moisturisers so as not to irritate your skin.

Choose skin-care/ acne products with active ingredients. Here are the most common ingredients to look out for:

Benzoyl peroxide: works best on inflammatory acne (such as cysts and red bumps), because it kills acne-causing bacteria.

Salicylic acid: ideal for blackheads and whiteheads because it unclogs pores.

Sulfur: a more gentle ingredient that can dry out dead cells to unclog pores and absorb excess sebum.

Warning: Be careful not to mix or over-use too many active ingredients because it could cause excessive dryness and make your acne worse!

Other general advice includes staying hydrated, limiting makeup and always being sure to wash it off fully at the end of the day to prevent clogging up pores. I know you don’t want too after a night drinking at the club, but trust us your skin will thank you.

Also limit sun exposure, as frequent sun exposure can dry out the skin. To combat this, we recommend applying at least an SPF 30 moisturiser on your face every day. Look out for light/ oil-free ones.

Stress has been proven to worsen the skin, so try to be mindful and participate in activities that allow you to relax, such as yoga.
