Causes of excessive sweating

Excessive sweating, also known as Hyperhidrosis is a health condition that can affect the whole body or particular areas of the body. It’s essentially the process of your body overproducing sweat and can be caused by various things.

It can be hard to diagnose hyperhidrosis as you may not necessarily know how much sweating is too much, especially if you regularly exercise or live in a hotter climate. Sweating is normal during exercise and strenuous activities, but you may be suffering from hyperhidrosis if you’re still excessively sweating when your body does not need cooling down.

There isn’t one root cause for excessive sweating, although it is typically thought to be caused by an issue with part of the nervous system called the sympathetic nervous system. But it can be caused or worsened by;

  • Medication

Excessive Sweating Treatments

There is currently no cure for Hyperhidrosis, but there are lots of treatment methods to help minimise, if not eradicate the issue. The most effective method involves Botox, there are lots of over-the-counter treatments available but none of them are as effective as this long-lasting treatment. Botox treats hyperhidrosis by blocking the nerve signals in the affected area that instruct the sweat glands to become active.

This treatment has been known to reduce excessive sweating by up to 85% and depending on the individual can last up to 6 months. Results will start to show within 4-5 days of treatment.

Leading up to your treatment, there are also a few day-to-day tips you can follow in order to minimise the effects of excessive sweating.

  • Wear loose-fitting clothing

  • Wear moisture-absorbing socks

  • Change socks throughout the day if you can

  • Wear breathable shoes

  • Avoid things like spicy foods or alcohol which can increase sweating
