What you need to know about dermal filler treatments

Dermal fillers are a popular cosmetic treatment that involves filling the skin with filler to smooth out wrinkles, enhance features, restore volume, or facially contour. Typically, dermal fillers are made up of hyaluronic acid which is a substance naturally produced within the body to hydrate and add structure to the skin.

During dermal filler treatments, your healthcare professional will inject filler into marked-out areas of the face to achieve the look you want. Some areas that can be treated by dermal fillers are;

  • Nasolabial folds (smile lines)
  • Cheeks
  • Lips
  • Marionette lines
  • Under the eyes

As you age, skin begins to lose elasticity and collagen production begins to slow. Filler allows you to add that youthful bounce back into your skin, and add volume back into areas where it may have begun to diminish. Unlike Botox, the results from dermal filler are typically instant, and can last for several months up to a year. Depending on the area treated, the filler used, lifestyle and metabolism.

The Benefits Of Dermal Filler Treatments

There are many benefits of dermal fillers as a treatment, such as;

  • Immediate results

  • Minimal downtime

  • Decrease signs of ageing

  • Can help with acne scarring

  • Restore plumpness

  • Brighten up complexions

  • Minimally-invasive

How dermal fillers work?

Hyaluronic acid attracts moisture, it is used in dermal filler, ensuring plump, hydrated skin at all times. As collagen production slows, the volume in our face begins to slow and we can end up looking hollow and flat. Reintroducing the hyaluronic acid to skin restores the plumping effect, and fills areas like wrinkles and fine lines.

Longevity

Longevity can vary depending on the area that has been treated and your body’s metabolism. But typically filler can last anywhere from 6 months – 2 years.

Side Effects

Following your treatment, you may experience slight swelling, redness, tenderness and very occasionally bruising. These aftereffects are very short lived and should subside within a few hours. For lip filler, this may experience more swelling than other injection sites within the first few hours.

Aftercare

Vigorous activity or exercise should be avoided for up to 48 hours after treatment. Please also avoid touching any of the injection sites after treatments, and to avoid applying any makeup for at least 24 hours.

You’ll see improvement immediately, but results continue to enhance over 2–3 weeks as the filler integrates, hydrates, and settles into the tissues.

Dermal Fillers Can Treat:

  • Cheeks / MidFace – add lift & structure
  • Nasolabial folds & marionette lines – soften deeper static lines
  • Jawline – shape, contour, or mask jowls
  • Tear troughs – reduce undereye hollows (when suitable)
  • Temples – address hollowing and restore facial balance
  • Chin – improve projection and symmetry
  • Lips – add volume, hydration, or subtle definition

The most commonly used fillers — including those at The Cosmetic Centre — are made from hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the skin that hydrates, plumps, and supports the tissues.

They also contain lidocaine to improve comfort during treatment.

Are They Reversible?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved using a prescription enzyme called hyaluronidase. This is used in rare cases of complications such as:

  • Vascular occlusion
  • Infection
  • Visible lumps
  • Overfilling/misdirected filler

This ensures that hyaluronic acid fillers offer both versatility and safety.
