Causes Of Body Hair

There is a health condition specifically for women called Hirsutism. This is when the body overproduces hair and at a much faster rate than normal. Typically, men have much more body hair and facial hair than women, but being diagnosed with something like Hirsutism, or family history/ethnic background can mean that you have darker, coarser body and facial hair.

Typically women don’t get much hair around the upper lip, back, chest or chin, but it is possible. Hirsutism is triggered by the overproduction of male hormones called androgens. Naturally, women also produce androgens, but only small amounts in comparison to men’s levels of production. When out of balance, this can trigger things like Hirsutism.

As well as this certain ethnicities are known for having darker, coarser hair that not only grows quicker, but is more noticeable. There are other causes of excessive body hair, such as;

  • PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome)
  • Out Of Balance BMI
  • Medications
  • Cushings Syndrome
  • Acromegaly

Body Hair Treatments

There is no official cure for Hirsutism, however thankfully it is a very manageable condition with lots of different treatment methods. The most obvious is using razors to shave excess body hair, however, this is a very short-lived fix and this will have to be repeated over and over again, likely as a daily occurrence. Some other treatment methods are;

  • Waxing

  • Threading

  • Hair removal cream

  • Medicated cream

  • Laser hair removal

The most successful and long-lasting treatment method would be laser hair removal. Laser hair removal is a non-invasive procedure that uses a laser to remove unwanted hair from the body and face. An infrared laser absorbs the melanin found in hair follicles, it only takes a fraction of a second and works to damage the hair follicle to not only remove the hair but also slow or stop the growth rate of new hair. The laser will not damage or affect your skin, the laser stays on the follicle long enough to damage the follicle, without touching your skin. We are often asked if laser hair removal is painful, like most cosmetic treatments, everyone’s experience is different. A few of our patients have likened it to having a rubber band lightly pinged against the skin, but it’s a short process so doesn’t last long.
